What does it take?

My oldest friend has breast cancer. I’ve tried to describe it in other ways: a lump in her breast…a scare…a…but it’s breast cancer. Stage One, but breast cancer all the same. From when she first discovered a lump over the weekend, she’s had a painful biopsy, the terrible wait for the results, an appointment made for a CAT scan next week, and then surgery. The surgeons will decide then whether they have to remove her breast, and the probability is great that they will.

She’s not yet 43, and she has 3 children. Her mother died of breast cancer, and she’s been very good about her screenings. And she has breast cancer.

Protect Ourselves, Ladies!

I’m ashamed to say that I do not know what cervical cancer is all about.

But after attending the POCC event, I learnt that cervical cancer is a common and preventable disease. Power Over Cervical Cancer (POCC) is a campaign to help women in Singapore to protect themselves against cervical cancer.
Cervical Cancer is…

I used to think cervical cancer only happened to other women

Not anymore. Not after my doctor discovered pre-cancer in my cervix. I was terrified.
Luckily for me, it was detected early.

In the past, I never thought of going for a pap smear test. What was the hurry anyway? I was young, healthy, I felt great – so there was nothing to worry about, right?

Happy Mother’s Day

It’s Mother’s Day today and I’ll be taking my family out for a celebration over dinner to honor that special woman in my life. I love my mother, she’s a wonderful person who always puts others before herself. The smart cookie has been a fantastic role model to me and my younger sisters because Mom always, always lives by example.

Contrary to what people may assume, I come from a very humble family and Mom’s really worked very hard. She used to be a nurse, and I think she used to hope that one of her 3 girls would be a medical professional one day… but I don’t think that’s gonna happen. LOL. However, health is still tremendously important. So that’s why I feel there’s no better day than today to talk about this women related issue…

After seeing Mom suffer from Cervical Cancer, I’m protecting myself

Hi, my name is Wen Ning. I’m here to share my experience with Cervical Cancer.

I was 17 years old when mom was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She was so young then, only 40.

I remember the day so clearly.

Mom burst into tears as I walked through the door. That’s when she told me she had cervical cancer and that she did not want to die yet and leave me behind. I can’t remember exactly what happened next, only that I decided I had to be strong for Mom.
